That new low end emac sounds like something I might have to get. I mean, 1.42 now, 80 GB, 64MB 9600, all it needs is some more memory and it will be a nice little machine. Especially for that price, $800 is actually good competition for a comparable cost PC for what it can do. I just wish they would upgrade the mac mini speed and video wise, but oh well, eventually I am sure.

The eMac is finally up to where it needs to be. The low end model is a great deal. The 64MB video and larger hard drive that the previous version make it a steal. Just add a little RAM and all is good. It can still play most games on the market decently and could even run Doom3. It represents a better value than the mini now.

The new eMac reminds of the LC/Performa 630, back in the days. A 33 MHz 68040 with (extremely basic) 3D acceleration, it was a steal - but the last breath of a dying technology. It never had a successor, because the next generation of Performas went PowerPC.
Don't get me wrong, it was great machine and I think the eMac is as well, but it is a dead-end.

I just don't see this selling that well.
Why spend $800 when you could get a mini and an OK LCD for the same price?
I see 17-19" LCDs going for $200-300 from time to time.

If I had to choose between the mini and the eMac I would without a doubt go for the eMac. Faster hard drive with larger sizes available, more RAM slots, easier and cheaper to upgrade the optical drive plus it comes with a keyboard and mouse already.
The price for the mini with a 32MB GPU after buying a cheap $200 LCD and adding the keyboard and mouse would be $857 before taxes.
The price for the eMac with a 64MB GPU at the same specs is $799 before taxes. Add the 160GB hard drive for $50 as BTO and the price is almost the same for both machines.
I see the eMac as the better value right now. However, the mini's small form factor is still very cool.

Yeah, the $800 emac has everything and more than the $600 mini. The added 64MB and 9600 GPU are worth it with the 17" monitor and keyboard and mouse already there, it's a better deal than the mini. Now if the mini had a 9600 with 64MB ram, I would put them at a very close contender to each, deciding factors being whether you want better hard drive expandability and an all-in-one design vs a cool small form factor and the ability to pick your display. And you have a video output on the emac too, so you really could choose your monitor with it as well, though that would be kind of silly. But as it stands right now, I would choose the emac over the mini.

Well considering the eMac has the same specs as the low end iMac has except for the processor, bus speed, and vram I do not think the product is going away. It is suitable for education and the upgrade was significant enough to make a difference. I think people will buy it regardless of the mac mini's popularity because it is all-in-one so it comes with everything you need and it fills the gap of the $799- $999 price range. The mac mini will always be cheap and have lower specs than the eMac and this is a guarantee for now. The product has just been evened out from my perspective and I cannot wait to see more eMac set ups.

Yesterday's updates leave the mini and iBook as the only machines not fully compatible with CoreImage. This is only speculation but one would think that those two will be fitted with Radeon 9600 video cards and hopefully somewhat soon. I'm not sure the smart shopper would now spring for a mini or iBook before they are upgraded unless they had an immediate need. My two cents.
