I'd like to take my dual 2 G5 up to 1 or 1.5G of RAM. I've not been paying very close attention, but do seem to remember some issues with 3rd party chips not working so great. Any advice regarding what I should specifically stay away from? A quick browse of dealram shows quite a wide variation in prices for the same size chip...

I just plopped 4 sticks of 512 from crucial in mine and it passed the extended hardware test in 37 minutes.
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

Newegg has corsair dual 512 packs on sale for $131 http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Produ...82E16820145450

They are high quality if not at a bit of a premium price. They work every bit as well if not better than crucial products based on my experience. However, I can tell you that I don't have a powermac, but I don't see any reason that compatability would be an issue.

Stick in 1GB modules: you won't regret later.
They have to go in pairs, fyi.

I'm seeing *huge* variations in pricing on the same size sticks. Here's a 1 G (2 512's) for $70 - is this something to steer away from?

If you use good quality (Corsair, Crucial, Kingston) (Ya i know there are more) ram chips you should have no problems. Macs use pc3200 400 mhz c3 ram chips. If your looking for a bargain on 1 gig chips, check out newegg.com they have some Corsair ValueSelect 1 gig chips for only $95 per stick. Great ram, good company, lifetime warranty. I have 2 gig in my power mac and 1 gig in my iMac, works just great.
PowerMac G5 - 2.0 4 1/2 Gig Ram - Tiger 10.4.2
30" Apple Monitor - LaCie d2 Tripple 320 Gig
iMac G5 1.8 1 1/2 Gig Ram 20" - Tiger 10.4.2
Amd64 - Gamer - Water cooled

why dont you get corsair 1gb modules for $96, thats the best... you save money in the long run by getting 1gb modules... that way you will be able to max your powermac out to 8gb...

zipzoomfly has the corsair 1GB modules that match Apple's specs for $90/piece shipped out 2 day fed-ex. Incredible deal!

I just ordered three, two for my new PM on the way and one for the new Mac Mini on the way.
