Okay, two options, obviously the imac is better, but what i wanna know is, how much better. I'm debating between a 1.42ghz g4 emac with the following options:
-512mb memory
-160gb hard drive
-airport extreme
--this comes out to $910.00

or the following 1.8ghz g5 imac:
-512mb hard drive
-160gb hard drive
-(included) airport extreme
--this comes out to $1200.00

I guess my main question is, will that $300 be worth the extra boost in speed. I'm in high school and really all i do is email/aim chat, light music downloading, word processing, no gaming or anything that really sucks the juice out of the comp. However, i might try recording a song or two here and there, but again nothing too extreme.

btw, im leaning towards the emac just because $300 is a lot of money to high school kid, so really take that price into account.

I think the $300 difference is worth it for the slight improvement in speed and the much superior display, not to mention the massively smaller desk space, included wireless, etc.

How long do you plan to keep your computer? If it is for awhile, the $300 will be worth it.

Does Apple give an educational discount for high school, or did you already include that in the pricing?

Good luck with the decision, I'd go with the iMac .

The education discount applies because my mom is a teacher . I'm going away to college in two years, is that considered a long time?

i was always looking at replacing my imac fp/8oo with a powermac , but considering the crap i do , like surf the web , emails , light office duties , very light photoshop etc , i think a dual g5 is overkill as well as being ridiculously expensive

the new imac is a really excellent piece of kit and amazng value for money and i'm very excited aboot getting one

personally i think this whole expansion / upgrade thing is vastly overrated

plus the imac is so compact , no mess of wires etc

$300 can almost cover the difference between the 1.8GHz G5 and the 1.42Ghz G4. G5 all the way!

I would say go for the iMac because I like LCD screens much better and it is quite a bit faster.

yea, your best bet is a refurbed rev a iMac. Even though it isn't quite as good as the current iMacs, it is still superior to today's emac - and all for the same price!

hmm... if you do decide you dont want the imac.. then why not get a mini instead of the emac. For the same price you could get a mini with a better screen. Of course you'll have a smaller HD, but that can always remedied externally.

Bah... just get the imac
