Hello everyone, this is my first post---on my new Mac Mini
Recently, I said enough was enough and dumped Windoze for good. I went out to the Apple store (cool place) and bought a Mac Mini. I think this is a stroke of genius by Apple because had it not been for this baby, I would not be moving to Mac so quickly.
Anyway, I have 10.3 Panther on my mini and all is great thus far. I am wondering if Tiger is worth the upgrade for a Mini user? If I read it right, it is like $150, which is a big chunk of change, especially for a Mini.
I plan to purchase a Power Book later this summer (I hope).
Just curious what others thought.
As far as the Mini goes, I am very happy with it so far. For the money, it is amazing. My pocket PC and Ipod take up as much space as my Mini does

if you are getting a Powebook later this summer just wait on Tiger as *caugh* in theory one could use the install/restore disks that come with that on the mini.
Yes there is some neat stuff on Tiger, but nothing earth shattering. I'd wait until you get the powerbook...also by then many of the bugs in Tiger (that have yet to be found but always show up) will be fixed.

Jam, no need to shell out an additional 130. Go to this site http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ for more information.
Basically it says that if you bought your Mac on April 12th or after you are eligible to get Tiger by just paying for the media ($10 USD).
I also bought my Mac mini the day before yesterday and I'm applying to get my copy of Tiger this way.
regards

Wow that is awesome!
I purchased mine on April 13th (whew). I almost went a few days before that--glad I didn't.
I figured the release is just an eye candy thing. Can't go wrong for $10 though.
Thanks again.

Tiger runs fine on my mini. There's no ripple in Dashboard but I can get that with my PB17.

No, Tiger is not just "eye Candy" no matter how much the Mac haters out there like to call it that. It is an upgrade with over 200 features and fixes and new things. It is well worth the $129 retail price for the full install, expecially if you compair it to the Full install price of XP Pro.
Quite a few of the inital glitches have already been fixed and Tiger 10.4.1 will be released rather soon now, probably within 2 or 3 weeks. For $10 you would be a fool not to buy it.

That's because your video card can't handle it. Your system has to be capable of core video in order to get the ripple effect of installing a widget.

I agree, and it's $129 USD, not $150 USD.
Also, it's not just eye candy. There are always bumps with major upgrades. I bet you will see a 10.4.1 upgrade within a month. Considering the upgrade basically ensures that your system will be able to run all the latest and greatest for the next one to two years, I think it's worth it.
It's going to take the developers a little time to catch up with many of the upgrades.

I just got Tiger in the mail for $10!
I am going to install it later. Will this erase all my bookmarks, prefs, etc?

On my mini. I also have a PowerBook 17 with 1.5GB of ram and get the ripple just fine. After the first time, it doesn't impress much.

You can choose to upgrade your existing panther instalation and all your preferences and such will remain intact. I did that on my Mac mini. Some people prefer to do a clean install.. i did that on the past (with Panther), but this time I tried to upgrade and everything went smoothly.
