Does any one have got the new imac(rev b?)
Do they reslove the problems like fan noise?
thx
There were once four people named Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody. Somebody had to do a job, but Nobody wanted to do it. Nobody could see that Anybody could do it, and Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Nobody ended up doing it, and it so happened that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I am getting one very soon. The middle one, 2.0ghz 17" with a gig of RAM.

What is this fan noise you speak of? I use a RevA at work, typing these words on it. I has no fan noise whatsoever. I was running UT2004 on it last week and it doesn't make a sound. Not a whisper. I wsa beginning to wonder if it even had fans.

What other problems have you heard of then?

So Lucky!

• I will be getting the 17" 2.0GHZ.
• I will be sticking with the good old Apple Bluetooth mouse (unless I get hooked on UT2004 and need something more suitable!)
• I already have those speakers! They ROCK!!!!
• I have an old 2nd Gen 10gb iPod. It is a dog of war.

Congrats on your new toy!

You're very lucky. I just bought my rev. A iMac G5 yesterday (1.6 GHz, 17''). I hadn't read up on it before purchasing. It makes an obnoxious buzzing noise that changes in pitch as CPU usage varies. You don't notice it when there's ambient noise in the room, but when the room is quiet, the noise is very annoying. It sounds like a fan is not working quite right.

I called Apple yesterday about fixing it, and they are going to get back to me.

I'm thinking of just returning it, but I can see that being a big hassle too.

I'm curious to hear if the rev. B's have fan noise issues too.

Glad you like it.

So you didn't get it BTO with 1 GB? The reason I ask is because I got a BTO, and I am still waiting for it to ship.

How about some XBench specs by those of you who've already had their system delivered. Feel free to provide them for both Automatic and Highest settings. I'd like to see these results to also determine if the SATA HD performance issue has been corrrected.

XBench is a bit inconsistent, but it should at least give us an idea if Apple fixed the SATA performance over the Rev. A's that exhibited such poor results. Run it with no other applications open as this could affect the results, and if possible, run it twice. Once with the processor setting at Automatic, the other at Highest.

make sure youre on highest settings in energy saver preference tab, download xbench (www.xbench.com), restart your computer so that nothing is running in the background, start up xbench and click begin, don't touch your computer while it's doing its thing, post the results up, and you're done.

I'm planning to get one of these soon, so I'm very interested in the results. Have you heard the loud fan noise other have talked about with the rev A models?

Remember: the screws don't come out -- you just turn them counter-clockwise until they move their little internal clips into the "open" position.

How's the fan noise? Have you had a chance to use the machine for a little while in a quiet room?

BTW, what's "BTO" mean?

Can someone who owns the new imac with 9600 card check the system profiler under graphics/displays and see if core image says supported. Please and thanks,

I'm pretty sure (98% sure) it is all good, but the apple website only mentions 9600XT as supported.... my understanding is that the imac does not have XT.

I got my new 20" iMac yesterday - picked it up at an Apple Store, completely stock. It's fantastic! Very quiet! I can tell you that, looking at the little animation file on Apple's website of the back coming off, the heatsink and fan layout has changed slightly. It's an amazing machine - I am extremely happy with it. I'll throw 2GB of RAM in it next month when I recoup from the purchase. As far as supporting core image, I'm not in front of it now but if the ripple effect when adding dashboard widgets is a sign that it's using core image, then yes it does.

I ordered this same config except an upgrade to 1GB RAM last Friday... it's still "Processing Order" and I'm about ready to die! If it doesn't ship by Thursday (for delivery Friday), I don't know if I'll be able to make it another weekend.....

Has anyone tried booting the new iMac off a 10.3.9 drive yet? I don't think it will work, but FWIW that does work with the new dual 2.7 Power Macs.

So today was supposed to be my ship day, but so far I've heard nothing. You've got a half day more to make good on your promise Apple.

Do you know if Panther can be clean installed on the 2.7? Does it have to be installed onto a drive on another machine?

I don't think it can be clean installed on the 2.7, but somebody reported at www.hardmac.com that a boot from an external Firewire hard drive with 10.3.9 does work fine.

P.S. Somebody at Ars just reported that it works on the new iMac too, except that the fans cycle up and down.

Thanks Mark, however, as iREZ stated in his post, if you could kindly post the results and provide a link so that we could see the individual breakdown that would be better. Without that, there's no way for us to compare the SATA performance of these to the previous models.

20" arriwed today, here in Denmark.. Stock machine.

Its AWESOME! HD files runs fullscreen without a hitch.. That was the most taxing I could throw at it.. (Downloading ET right now, UT2K4 after that)

One thing I noted, it says in systemprofiler that it is a 2.0 Ghz G5 (3.0) - What up with that 3.0??

Edit: Oh and it runs very quiet!

> Edit: Oh and it runs very quiet!

Re. noisy fan: I ended up returning my 1.6 GHz rev. A. At first Apple said they'd try sending me a new midplane board. Then they said it turns out that they don't send 'em out anymore, and that I could take it to a shop and have it replaced under warranty -- but they weren't really sure that would even fix the problem. I seemed like it would be a pain down the road, so I returned it.

My parents returned their first 1.6 17" too due to noisy fans. The replacement computer is a bit quieter, but it makes a different kind of noise. They decided to put up with it. I can't stand it as I'm used to the silent iBook.

I'm thinking about getting a new iMac for myself though, finding 16mb VRAM per monitor simply isn't enough with the iBook.
