The install was dead easy... the performance difference is truly noticeable. Applications like Virtual PC are actually usable now. Under the old dual 533mhz cpu's I had VPC was nothing but an exercise in patience! (the old dual 533 card was what came with the G4 when I first bought it) The only thing that went wrong is that now my Macromedia applications do not launch for some reason. I emailed support... hopefully they will have a fix for me tomorrow. The good news is that my rig is now "real time" capable with all the new Apple applications like FCP & Motion.

If you've got a Digital Audio G4 or a G4 that's mobo is like the Digital Audio's make sure you put the screws on the fans that attach to the heat sink first bf you attach the cpu to the socket... the instructions are printed out to show the Sawtooth mobo installation first... which is different in order to the Digital Audio method... which is printed second... did not see that till too late and had to redo everything.

The flash is probably the most tricky part of the installation... but the instructions are really good.

That's about it... everything else is butter. I'd be interested to see if you had any apps that do not launch like my situation with the Macromedia suite... post it up here if you get a free chance!

So it makes economic sense to upgrade the processors rather than upgrade to a new Mac?

For me it made sense... I like my G4 and I don't have enough for a new G5.

How bad is the heat problem? I'm having a hard time trying to cool a GigE with dual 1.4s.

The heat issue is bad in mine because I have 6 SCSI drives in the bottom of the G4. I'm picking up this cooler today at the tigerdirect store... it should solve the issue:

Problem is, to balance the exhaust, you need a good air intake. On my GigE (I don't recall if the DA is similar) the intake is not that great. I guess I could drill a bunch of holes in the front...

Man you're right... still crashing... I emailed support. This must be a big issue judging by the way my machine is freezing up. Never did that ever. Is there a way to under-clock these chips?

Is anybody elses G4 upgrade actually crashing?

My problem turned out to be a bad molex connection to the cpu card power connector. Everything is running fine now.
