My eMac is dog slow on the internet. My DL speed is only 90 kbps if I am lucky. My PC tests at well over 1000. What is the problem? I use Comcast and the Mac is hooked right into the router.

Could this be a hardware issue? What can I check to find the issue?

Thanks

Network slow because of heavy usage? But that doesn't explain why your PCs gets better speed. Is this a new problem or something that has happened before? Have you tried resetting your connection to the network? You can of course also call Comcast directly. I'm supposed to be getting Comcast high speed cable this weekend, I'm interested in your experience. At $42 a month, it ain't cheap!

My eMac does fine on the internet ... just as fast as any PC on my network. Try http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest/ , test your speed a few times, and see what the results are.

This should belong in the Networking forum but...

Same here. PC got 2.6mb, iBook got 2.5mb. Downloads speeds reported by Safari show the same.

The only 2 computers are my eMac and PC. The eMac got the slow result even when it was the only computer turned on. The problem has been for a while. I just finally did a speed test on DSL reports and it faired poorly. I am going to try replacing the cat5 cable between the router and the Mac first. Next I will try using my wireless USB adapter and see if it is faster. If so then it may be the on board ethernet? I am already on my 2nd logic board....one more issue and Apple promised me a new eMac....but I really hope its something stupid.

Have you tried to reset the PRAM? Hold down the Command (Apple key), Option, P, and R keys when booting up your eMac or after restarting it. I'd hold those keys down for about 5 system start up chimes and see what that does. Worth a shot but I can't guarantee anything.

Try switching ports on the router if possible. Maybe there is something wrong with where you plug the cat5 going from the router to the eMac. Or better yet call up Comcast and ask them to change your MAC (Media Access Control) address from what they have on file (the router) to your eMac (found in System Preferences - Networking - Built-in Ethernet - Ethernet tab, shows as Ethernet ID). Now you'll be going straight from the cable modem to the eMac, run test now. If speeds are still slow maybe it is the ethernet on the eMac as you first thought.

I tried a different cable and a different port on the router...still slow...

I have a wireless USB adapter from DLink I am going to try. If the speed is where it should be could the router be bad? The PC connects wirelessly so maybe the wired part of the router is going bad? I have had problems with my ethernet printer (having to reboot the router) printing. It is a Belkin 4 port 802.11b wireless router, it is about a year and a half old.

It's more likely the router than the eMac - try a direct connection.

I tried a direct connection and it is the router. Guess it's time for a new one.
