All of my video editing programs no longer recognize my firewire camera(sony trv720). They all give a message that one can not be found, even when it's clearly on and plugged in. Under system profile, it even initializes a firewire device, so it's good that far. I recently updated to 10.3.9... maybe this could have caused the problem? What's the best way to trouble-shoot this?

Check the Sony website to see if they have released newer drivers than what you had installed. Install the newer drivers, if there are any. Alternatively, try reinstalling the camera's current drivers. You'll probably have to reboot for the fix to take.
