The recently announced specs for the Xbox 360 bode really well for the next generation of PowerMacs G5. It also bodes well for a PowerMac G5 revision sometime this summer.
The Xbox is speced to be using three IBM PowerPC chips that are clocked at 3.2 GHz, that have a 128 vector processing unit, that have 1 MB of L2 cache, and tha tare DUAL CORE. The Xbox360 is supposed to be available this fall, in time for the holiday season.
Since these IBM PowerPC chips are derivatives of the 970 family that power current PowerMacs (and presumably the next generation of PowerMacs), it is natural to assume that these chips should be available for use in PowerMacs around the same time.
Dual dual core based PowerMac G5s running at 3.0 GHz? How about a quad dual core PowerMac G5?
The other really cool feature, is that MS was able to fit three processors in such a small form factor. Hopefully this means that the next generation of G5's can lose the huge heat sink (smaller form factor towers or perhaps more space inside for more expansion–drives, PCI cards, etc.). More importantly, maybe Apple now has a cool enough, low power-consuming G5 chip they can slap into a new PowerBook
