Hi.
I was under the impression that the recently revised iMacs fully supported Core Image in Tiger. But upon browsing the Apple site at this page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301347 apparently the Radeon 9600 does not. Core Image needs a Radeon 9600XT or better.
Can someone clarify whether they do or not.

That's a good point. It says here that "the ATI Radeon 9600 takes full advantage of the graphics capabilities in Mac OS X Tiger for ultra-fast processing of complex per-pixel imaging operations" and you'd certainly expect it to support Core Image, as these cards were updated a few days after the release of Tiger - but nowhere I can find says clearly that the card actually does so.

Yeah. Thats my point. I can only find that the 9600XT and above support Core Image, not the 9600 as in the new iMacs.
If someone here has a new iMac and is running Tiger, can they confirm that the "ripple" effect works with the 9600 or not. I guess thats the only way to know. Will know then that they do support Core Image.

Okay, what I have gathered from some searching is that a card must support Pixel Shader 2.0 to be Core Image compatible. This FAQ lists the spec of all cards, and low and behold, the 9600 supports Pixel Shader 2.0, just like the 9600XT.
The only thing that seems to seperate the two is the clock speed, RAM speed and associated performance figures, but it should be CI compatible. Someone else pointed out that Apple's list is not complete, and that it said "Compatible cards include 9600XT" etc.
It seems impossible that they would've used incompatible cards in what they hope will be the main source of Mac sales for foreseeable future.
I'd still like CONFIRMATION though. I might just swing by the Piccadilly Apple store and have a look for myself.

Does this mean the Radeon Mobility 9600 in the older 15-inch PowerBook supports CI then. I was offered a fully loaded one recently at a very good price but didn't cos I though it wasn't CI compatible. Grrrr.

I suppose. Check out the other thread yyou asked in. I think hudson1 answered this question. It's still not confirmation of the "Ripple" though. Man, I was disappointed when my iBook didn't do the ripple. :-(

I guess that answers my question. But why don't Apple update their site with the correct info.

We have Tiger installed on an iMac G5 (Rev A, 17" 1.8Ghz) at work, and it does the ripple effect. I would've been really surprised if Apple updated the iMac and made it less capable then the previous revision.

Yeah. I've written to Apple about this -- their list on the Core Image page isn't exhaustive, though they make it sound as if it were. Anything 9600 or higher appears to be CI-compatible.
