personally , i'd go for the dual 2 ghz , nobody really uses pci-x , 4 gigs of ram is still a heck of a lot and the 2.3 speed up will be hardly noticeable
anyone going for other models ?

You're likely right; if I were in the market today I would have a harder time choosing. It was easier when I got my Rev B DP 2.0 because the only DP models were the 2.0 and the 2.5. $500 is a significant differential; 300MHz, extra RAM slots and PCI-X alone probably don't justify the extra cost.

Actually the best value for the money right this moment is the discontinued dual 2.5. You can snag them for $2399 from the Special Deals section of the AppleStore, and some Apple retail stores may still have them in stock.

The OP specified model "within the current range." The DP 2.5s are great values as long as you trust the liquid cooling. I would definitely suggest one to someone looking at the 2.7.

2.5 falls between 2.3 and 2.7, and you can still get them direct from Apple. I consider that "within the current range"

The old 2.5 is fine, except it has the liquid cooling which made me stay away from the 2.7 as well and if you are going to discount the 2.3 over the 2 for "only" 300Mhz, well, the 2.5 "only" has 200Mhz more, so that argument fails.
I went for the 2.3 because I could use 8 GB of ram, better slots but didn't want the liquid cooling.
Bang for buck now is the refurbed 2.0 and 1.8s.

Not when the dual 2.5 costs a full $100 less than the dual 2.3 for otherwise the same specs, save the optical drive.
