i have this model running 10.2.8 and want to get up to tiger.
apparently, my model didn't come with the ability to play dvd's - which means i can't install tiger cuz it only be dee vee dee!!!
so do i go ahead and install a dvd in the second drive on my mac? is that how it works? i never figured out what the bottom chassis/drive was for? i assume it's dvd's or some other drizive. how does it open? when i hit eject on th keyboard it only opens the top cd tray.

You have not said which PowerMac you are using. The lower front bay was intended for a Zip drive on most PowerMac G4s, it can also take a hard drive, but not an optical drive. The MirrorDriveDoor models can take a 2nd optical drive in the lower bay.

Replacing the optical drive isn't too hard. If you want maximum compatibility, get a Pioneer 108 or 109. Both have been used by Apple as Superdrives, so OSX has good support for them. Some other drives will work, others will not - or will work, but not boot the system.

For a list of supported optical drives for any Mac model (be it dvd or cd burner or superdrive) go to the drive compatibility database at the Accelerate Your Mac website.

With your QuickSilver PowerMac you are going to need to replace the cd-rom optical drive you have working there, the second drive is just aimed to get a iomega Zip drive. I guess you know you can get Tiger on CDs but I would instead choose to replace the cd rom drive with a dvd burner drive.
