I have an 800MHz G4 15'' flat-panel iMac. This was one of the models that needed the SuperDrive Update a couple years ago, which I did download. Therefore, according to my System Profiler, my SuperDrive is: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104, Revision A227. And according to Apple (http://www.apple.com/hardware/superdrive/), my drive should now be compatable with 8x DVD-R media.

My problem: I recently ran out of 1x or 2x DVD-R's which have been working completely fine. I bought a new spindle of FujiFilm 8x DVD-R's and I am trying to burn my first data DVD with one of these new discs. It makes it through the 'Burning' process in Finder's burner, but spits the DVD-R back out due to an error with the Verification process. When I put the DVD back in, it spits it back out.

So what is causing this problem? Should I not be using 8x at all despite having a compatable drive? Or should I just stay away from FujiFilm media in particular? Or should I not be using Finder and instead use something like Toast?

Thanks.

It happened again. Only this time, it verified about 5% of the way through until it went sour.

The message says:

An error occurred while verifying the disc. This disc may not work.
This disc did not verify correctly because it is unreliable. Because this disc is not reliable, discard it and try again using a new, blank disc.
(Error code 0x80020063)

What is causing this problem?

Would a 'slash' ('/') in file or folder names be causing this problem?

Thanks again.

After 3 unsuccessful tries with Fujifilm 8x DVD-R, I tried RiDATA 8x DVD-R and that worked the first try. So apparently the problem was not with the speed, the burner, the software, or the contents, but with the brand of media. Anyone know why 15'' 800 MHz G4 iMacs with the SuperDrive Update doesn't like Fujifilm media?

In the PC world media type is a huge factor in how sucessful a DVD burn is. I'm guessing that since your burner is an earlier Pioneer, it's even more susceptible (sp?) to this media bias. I'd find a brand that works, and stick with it.

As for the rest of your fuji's, you can try a slower speed.

With my burner, since it's older, there is only one speed: 1x. So I assume that selecting Maximum will just put it at 1x. It worked for the RiDATA brand of 8x, so I don't see why it wouldn't work for Fuji.

In my limited experience as a drive gets older it becomes more finicky to certain types of media. Media that may have worked fine before no longer works, etc... This happened with my first eMac, it used to burn super cheap media just fine and after time it would only burn Apple branded or Memorex media.

if that's true, isn't that a little bit disturbing? you end up buying media that may no longer work.

to anyone with a G4 800Mhz 15'' flatpanel iMac: what types of media aside from Fujifilm should I stay away from?

Trial and error, my friend. I've had trouble with one DVD brand as well, and I think it was the Fuji.
