since we have 16x super drive... has anyone actually bought media that supports this speed? if so what brand works well? How fast can you burn an entire 4.7gb DVD at 16x?

4.7GB DVD is sinlge layer... 16x should be around 3-4 minutes for a full 4.7GB DVD... take roughly double for a double layer DVD.

Double layer media burns at a much slower speed than single layer. The G5's DVD burner will write to single layer DVD-R and DVD+R at 16x, which is equivalent to 3-4 minutes (though it'll probably take closer to 10 minutes from when you put in the disc to when it's done). It only writes to DVD+R Double Layer discs at 4x, though, which means it'll take half an hour to burn a full double layer disc.

Not true.....the new G5s have either Sony DWQ28A (mine does) or the Pioneer DVR-109.
From Pioneer specs:
This new model supports 16x write speeds on both DVD-R/+R along with the capability to write at 6x speed on DVD-R/+R Double/Dual Layer media
the Sony is the same.

6x is still over half an hour for 8GB. Since media prices are so high, I don't think a lot of people will burn DL discs. It seems 8X DVD+R is the golden standard for writable DVD discs in the foreseeable future.
Bring on BluRay!

I've burned about 7.6 GB on DL media in about 25 min or so. And 12x for normal DVD-R in about 4 min. I haven't even found any 16x media. I use 8x media that burns at 12 on my Pioneer 109. Great drive worth the $65 I paid for it. Besides I can still use the machine while its burning so its not a big deal either way.
