Does anyone know if the new 2.7 G5s will work with OSX 10.3.9? I know they come with Tiger pre-installed but I'd like to downgrade to 10.3.9 until they get Tiger sorted.

Thanks.

I don't think they can actually boot into Panther. IIRC Eug Wanker posted something about being able to boot into Panther using a firewire HD. I can't find the post but maybe he will see this and post here.

They will and it works 100%. They are able to boot and install Panther using a 10.3.7 install DVD from an earlier G5. The new iMac G5s don't work correctly in Panther but the Power Macs definitely do.
Actually, I should add the following caveat. The 2.7s I've seen are shipping with Pioneer DVR-109 superdrives. These are not supported in Panther, so to burn discs you'll either need to install Toast or Patchburn.

Great info. Apple should do that for all there systems. Especially since Tiger is such a new OS and still has a few bugs that need to be worked out.

This is what Teh Steve has to say about the new iMacs in Panther:

Nigel,

Not going to happen. You should embrace Tiger. Its so much better than Panther. Most of its shortcomings (Pro Tools, etc) will get fixed rapidly.

All the best,
Steve

And I will confirm that the new iMacs don't work with Panther. Well they do, but the fans run at full speed, which means the machines are unusable in any normal environment.

Why? 10.4.1 is just fine.

I wouldn't say 100%. You absolutely could run into some driver issues, specifically around graphics cards.

I'd say, go with 10.4.1.

Neither the Radeon 9650 nor the NV6800 require any different drivers than what existed before Tiger. For my clients, there is no solution other than to use 10.3.9 as the cameras they are using will not work with Tiger. We have tested the systems extensively and I can definitely say they work completely fine with 10.3.9, with the exception of the DVR-109.
