Hi all i have been lurking for a while and have found out a bit but its time to "pick the colective brain" i think.

I was given a power mac 5500/225 with out a hard disk, its died and the machine was left in a shed fow a few years. and when i said i was looking for a Mac it was given to me.

They also gave me a maxtor 10gig ide drive from a pc the drive works and has been formated (fat 32) there was also an orange cd in the drive and the mac will start up and run with this cd in the drive.

CD is labled iMac Software Install
SSW version 8.5.1
CD version 1.0
z691-2177-A

I installed the drive in the plastic carier, in the case and conected uo the ide and power cables (a big thaks to those people on this site for the info on how to do this)
When it started it told me the drive needed to be inisilised, did that, But when i went to install the software, the sad that it could only be installed to the origional media.

Am i doing something really dumb?? or is there a way i can make this work? I lick mac and have one on loan at the moment, and want to stay with the mac. Or do i just save my pennies till i can aford to by an eMac on ebay like the one im using at the moment?

And chuck what could maybe a good start for me if i could make it work.

Sorry to be so long .

The install disk that you have isn't made for your machine. The disk will only work on an iMac. I have an iBook 300MHz and the disks that came with it are the same. They will only work on that model iBook.

I don't know of a work around but that's not to say that one doesn't exit.

You'll probably have to find a set of OS9 Cd's for it. Try ebay.

For more info on your Powermac go here: http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/5500.shtml
