Or is it just the luck of the draw? Will Apple fix this under warranty? I'm ready to spring for a 2.3 or 2.7, but I do a lot of music on the computer and I'm used to my 2x2.0 G5 at work being dead quiet, never chirped in its life.

It's never been all G5s, only some. And yes, the Apple rep I spoke to had no problem replacing the power supply under warranty. I told him I was having the chirping problem, he asked me to describe it, put me on hold for about 5 minutes and came back with a trouble ticket for warranty replacement of the power supply.

Unless you work in a studio, or live near a train station, your home is most likely a lot quieter than your office. Noises you may not hear at work can be quite audible at home. I wouldn't be able to hear my G5 chirping if it was in my office, but it drives me nuts at home.

My rev. A dual 2.0GHz machine had the chirp, but was easy to stop using the (non-recommeneded) CHUD tools to disable processor "nap" mode. My current machine, a dual 2.5GHz machine, doesn't have the chirp. But the fans frequently rev up when doing anything that needs more than about 25% processor effort.

I'd rather have the chirp.
