I have an iMac, the original blue one. It's still running os 8.something. (I'm sorry I can't tell you anything more specific like that or memory or disk space, it's at home and I'm at work.)

We don't use it often, my son uses it for games occasionally, but lately I've noticed it doesn't like to boot up. It'll get half-way through and restart, over and over again, not always at the same point. Sometimes it'll finally work, sometimes, i just pull the plug. I hear the usual startup sounds, nothing weird, and some clicking, like when you turn a TV on, that CRT power sound.

Oh, and sometimes it'll restart itself after a successfull boot.

What could be wrong? What should I try? Is this worth "saving?" Is there a retirement community for original iMacs?

If this has been discussed before, I appologize, I didn't find anything in a search.

thanks,

k-

Buy an Mac Mini. It'd be worth it. It's probably worthless to sell, but you can always give it away to someone who needs it.

My parents gave their original iMac to our uncle who didn't have a computer. Lots of people could use some for e-mail and word processor.

sounds like a hard drive problem. try reinstalling the OS. check the disk using drive first aid and using drive setup (the really long way). Oh yer, i just remembered, try reseting the PRAM. When the computer restarts, hold down option-the apple sign thing-p-r. make sure the caps lock is not on. this might fix it. i remembered it did this to me once, and then it stoped. try disconnecting the keyboard and mouse.

Sounds to me like it could be a failing power supply. But try kick52's suggestions first, they are simple and could fix it if it's a simpler problem.

Junk it and upgrade if it is.

thanks, guys, for your suggestions. I'm printing them out to take home.

I'd like a mini to replace it but we don't need another computer at the moment. we have 6 already. I'll list them if anyone really cares......

My autistic son plays a lot of the old Jumpstart edu games on it, that's about it now. Thing that kills me about this old imac is that you can't get anything off of it. Not easily, anway. Will the flash drives work? hmm. The flash drives are USB 2, and I'm assuming I've got USB 1 on the Blue?
