I still use an old G3 Beige with G4 ZIF OWC 533.
3 cards in PCI-slots: Sonnet Tempo 66, ATi Radeon 7000 and an D-Link Ethernet card.
two hard drives, Barracuda and Maxtor 80 GB connected to the Sonnet Tempo.

It appears that the disk damage is caused by a shutdown problem.
I use 9.2.2 and 10. 2.8.

Disk First Aid reports: Invalid B-Tree Header, 0, 0
and is unable to repair the startup disk.

That is what Norton 6.0.3 reports:
Check Catalog Tree
A major error was found in an index record in the Catalog B-tree.
Node 3 (level 2), record 44
The record has an incorrect key.
(10,4,11)
The B-tree was rebuilt.
A major error was found in a file thread record in the Catalog B-tree.
Node 2441, record 0
No file found for thread record "Shutdown Check".
(10,9,26)
The problem was fixed.

Can anyone help me to solve this problem?
I have to repair my disk every day and once I have lost a part of my data.

TIA

After you get DiskWarrior, check the "Hardware" tab in DW. You will see a button to test the HD in question, and report the SMART status. Do this, it polls the drive's internal diagnostics for impending failure.

If the drive passes, you might reseat the connectors on the IDE cable, including the connector on the Tempo card. Or invest in a new IDE cable.

The "shutdown check" they refer to is an invisible file by that name. MacOS 9 and below creates this file when it boots up, and deletes the file when it shuts down properly. The "file" is of zero length, just a directory entry. It is used as a safety flag, so the system will know if it crashed the last time.

example 1, normal sequence:
Bootup begins.
Check for a file named "shutdown check", file not found.
file system is assumed to be clean
- file called "shutdown check" created.
normal bootup continues.
System is up, user uses until he/she decides to shut down.
file called "shutdown check" deleted.
end shutdown.

example 2, after a crash:
bootup begins.
check for file named "shutdown check", file is present.
file system may be damaged
- Engage Disk First Aid, scan the drive for damage.
- This may take several minutes.
- Warn the user that the system didn't shut down properly last time.
normal bootup continues after the scan / repairs.
System is up, user uses until he/she decides to shut down.
file called "shutdown check" deleted.
end shutdown.

AHHHH! Stop using Norton! It's probably the very cause of the problems. Stop using it NOW, and get DiskWarrior and run that on your disks. And uninstall Norton and never use it again.

When I use virtual memory, there is no disk damage.
It had nothing to do with Norton and 6.0.3 seems reliable for 9.2.2.
I know it is incompatible with Panther, but i don't use this black cat on my upgraded G3 Beige.

Very simple, you have the drives setup improperly on your drive chain. Usually this is a conflict with jumper settings. Fix it and no more random errors.

The Sonnet Tempo 66 PCI card has two connectors, and both drives are connected with a different flat ribbon cable to the PCI card, and ID was set to master because there were 2 different chains.
What did I wrong?

I remember having this problem back when I was on 9.2.2. Norton for some reason won't fix the problem completely. DiskWarrior is the only program that will fix it but it may take a couple of tries. I had techtool when I started have the B-tree errors and techtool was useless so I bought diskwarrior and all has been fine since then. Basically don't use norton to try to fix the b-tree error as it will just make things worse.
