Hi - I'm looking to purchase a Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHz PowerPC. Don't laugh, I'm currently on a G3 desktop with a XLR8 G4 card. This glorified abacus is ridiculously slow and I've had enough.
Needless to say, I haven't purchased a new Mac in years... and I'm looking at all the online , brick/mortar merchants. I need some advice as to who to buy from - and who TO AVOID.
CompUSA has a great financing plan available tomorrow (6/11) only - but I've read that their customer service absolutely sucks.
Any *recent* rant/rave-worthy purchasing experiences you can share? I'm so tempted to just run to C tomorrow and buy - but I don't want to regret spending $2000-$2500 with the wrong company. Thanks a million!! -Mia

What about an iMac? It costs considerably less, includes a screen and will probably be fast enough for general purpose use.

Well, I actually need something faster than general purpose use. I do quite a bit of photoshop, quark, illustrator for my business.
I guess it would be easier to order directly from Apple for a BTO - but now I'm looking at Amazon's rebate offer, no tax, etc. (Pretty much decided I am NOT going to buy anything from CompUSA after all the rants I've read).
Regardless, I'm still hoping for some feedback on where most bought their newer PowerMacs/iMacs?
Good experiences/Bad? Thanks again -Mia

Keep an eye on Apple's refurb. & sale page. They come and go, but I saved $500.00 on my G5 by buying a refurbished.

LOL - I've been at the apple online store all day... chomping at the bit.
Chito - Question?? when did you get the financing offer?
Today's offer already expired but it was a good one. 48 months free financing up to $2000 and 60 months free financing up to $2499.
Maybe they offer these financing deals fairly often?? Ack... I spent all yesterday reading about their terrible customer service, though.. -Mia

I buy all my (and my company's) equipment, especially macs, from CDW unless I need a BTO config from apple or I'm using a developer discount from ADC. No complaints, always arrive on time and exactly what I order. The do (or at least did) have a nice selection of Rev. B DP 2.0's (eight RAM slots) a couple of weeks ago as well as the DP2.5's.

Well, looks like they're out of the 2.5's but they still have the older 2.0's in stock (same day shipping) for $1895 as well as the new 2.0's for $100 more.

thanks. I got my original G3 from MacWarehouse (CDW). You're right, smooth transaction, but I have CDW in my state so no deal tax/shipping wise - but I'll check them out. -Mia

I ended up getting my G5 dual 2.5 from Microcenter, don't know if there is one
in your locale. I considered the 2.7, I could have gotten it but what sealed the
deal is the fact that they had reduced the price of the machine by $700 and
then tossed in a free 3 year Applecare. That sealed it for me. I considered
the 2.3 but given that the 2.5 was a little faster and the extra service was there
I figured it was a smarter deal. The 2.7 would have been great but it was the
only one they had and was a display model and no free Applecare or discounts.

I bought my powerbook in February of this year. Looks like the killer financing deals come through Comp USA every few months or so. My DP 2.0 came form LA Computer Company. Thay had a sale and I actually got more than I paid for. There were no financing deals there though. It was my first time buying from them and I was taking a gamble because I never really heard much about them...I won that time. I'll second Todd's endorsement of MicroCenter...they're a top notch dealer.

thank you Chito & Todd - thank you all very, very much!! I appreciate all the info.
I used to get Microcenter's mailings every once in a while - I forgot all about them but they do seem to have awesome deals. Silly me. -Mia
