I recently sold an iMac 400 DV model to a customer who tells me that when he sets the screen resolution to 1024X768 he gets a "shimmer." It doesn't occur when he is using 800X600 resolution. I did not see any of this when I was testing the computer, so I'm worried that something could have happened to the CRT in transit, or worse, to the PAV board. Any ideas, suggestions?
Thanks!

it just might be that the resolution is too high for it. anyway, everythings just too small in 1024x786.
you should ask him to take a picture of it and then show it here.

He/she may have another electronic device placed too close to the display which has a strong magnetic field 'beating' with the vertical refesh frequency, I resited my eMac recently and the PSU for my router really affects it close up but I only need to move it 10 inches away and the effect is unnoticeable.

The iMac CRT is and always was pretty low-end and junky. People around the time had a funny way of convincing themselves otherwise. But the 15" didn't perform well at 1024 x768 and your customer should use 800 x 600. Tell him that's "optimal" resolution for the iMac.

I used to see a "shimmer" all the time on display models. I even have a slight "shimmer" on my Sage 450 DV+. What can you do? iMacs were not of the highest build-quality.

But they look so cool .. . . I agree that certain components maybe could have used a bit more quality .. . (there's that whole flyback transformer thing ... ), but when you compare them to the low quality of some of the Windows machines out there . . . I'm just amazed at how well so many of these iMacs hold up after 5-7 years.
I will freely admit to being a fan so I am not at all objective in this matter . ..
Thanks to everyone for the advice, by the way-- it is, as always, very helpful.
