Applecare is smart for ANY Mac if you intend on keeping it for three years. Hell, $169 is not much considering what these things cost to fix. Logic boards and power supplies can set you back $1000. The basic repair on any Mac is at least $300. It is just idiotic to not get Applecare for a desktop and/or laptop, or Safeware for a laptop.

Just to add, you can purchase Apple Care anytime within the 1 year warranty period to extend it to 3 years. You don't have to purchase Apple Care right away, instead you can wait till maybe 1 month before your 1 year warranty ends to make the decision.

iMac G5? You HAVE to get AppleCare as these Macs have major internal design issues that are still there in the revision 2 models. I know, I bought one and sent it straight back with bulging/leaking capacitors.

/hugs iMac G4

If you are going to buy applecare, it can be had for as little at $110 for the iMac, which would definitely make it worthwhile relative to the cost of the iMac

I know of a few people on these board that have purchased Applecare through them without any issues.

As for Applecare on the iMac I would say go for it. I had a 17" 1.8GHz original release. I finally traded it in for a PowerMac because of the problems that I had with it. If I would have kept it Applecare would have been in it's future.

My strategy with my last two macs: Skip Applecare.

Use the OEM 12 month warranty, try to keep the mac for about 18 months, then sell it. Apples are easy to sell. If it worked fine the first year, you will probably be able to eek out the extra 6 months and then just dump it on Craigslist. E-bay is a rip off.

Applecare is a rip-off and I won't play that.

ATi retail video cards have a 5 year warranty. Most hard drives have a 3 or 5 year warranty, and the best Apple can do is 12 months? Cheesers.

I guess my strategy is kind of like a car lease. I buy a mac for say, $2000. Use if for 18 months, sell it for $1400 or whatever. Roughly $33/month. Factor in the fact that I did not buy Applecare and it's not that bad and I stay in new hardware, although, the current Apple lineup is a yawner.

i'd applecare.

now i've always bought PC's and gotten the extended warranty bit (for like $350) and it's been the best money i've ever spent when the thing went on the fritz. i've gotten 2 new computers that way (which is why it has taken me so long to switch. hard to argue with a free upgrade. anyway...that's the story.

on the off chance that your computer breaks in some way, it is worth the money.
