hi

I currently have the standard 6GB hard disk installed

Although I like how silent it is -I'm looking for an equally non-noisy but much larger drive

The main thing I'll be using if for is editing DV

wondering if anybody has any recomendations?

thankyou in advance

A Seagate. Not only the quietest, but also have the longest warranty.

However, watch out: you must first know whether your computer is a Rev A or Rev B unit. Rev A B&W G3s have defective IDE controllers that cause severe data corruption on almost any drive other than the ones they came with. If you have a Rev A, you will also need to get a PCI ATA controller card.

If you have a Rev B, you can use a drive up to 120GB. If you use a PCI ATA controller card, you can buy a card that supports any size drive, all the way up to the 400GB drives on the market today.

If you're going to buy a new controller and new drive, go with a Serial-ATA setup. Not only are the drives comparably priced to ATA/IDE now, but the controllers run about $15 cheaper.

Plus you'll be able to pull the drive and put it in a new iMac G5 or PM G5 if you ever decide to go that route.

Before you buy a new hard drive and controller, make sure you price out what you could buy used on eBay for that amount of money. I ultimately decided that it was better to sell my old B&W "SmurfyMac" and get a used G4 (I ultimately got a Digital Audio). I laid out approx. $75-$100 more on the whole combination then I would have just to add a new hard drive (and controller) in my Rev A SmurfyMac, but I got a G4 in the deal as well, and the knowledge that I would no longer have to look at an ugly "G3" on the side of my case!

Since you're editing DV, you might be better off getting a G4, anyway. I personally think that getting a Serial ATA card and drive to put on a 400 MHz G3 (with a 100 MHz memory bus) for video editing is overkill, the hard drive bandwidth is probably not your bottleneck, the processor probably is. Make sure you have plenty of RAM, too, no matter what you use.

Of course, if the Mini was out back then, I might have put a little more money in the till and got one of those as an upgrade.
