I am trying to install Tiger on my Power Mac G4 400mhz using target disk mode as it does not have a DVD drive. When I startup with "T" pressed, it ignores the command and just boots into the OS (Jaguar). I have tried with the firewire cable plugged into port 1 and port 2, and have tried withe the firewire cable removed, and I still get the same problem. I also checked for a firmware update on the Apple site and it says my G4 does not need a firmware update.

Does anyone have suggestions?

Is it a Yikes! G4 or a Sawtooth G4? The Yikes! does not support TDM.

What is a Saw Tooth? How do I know if it is a Saw Tooth? If it is, what's my next best Tiger install option?

Okay, I have a Yike! G4 400 Mhz with PCI graphics, so it looks like target disk mode is out of the question? This does not make sense as I am reading about people installing Tiger on their G3 using target disk mode!?

What next? Haw should I go about installing Tiger?

Buy a new optical drive. You can get an Apple supported DVD burner for under $50 with shipping from NewEgg.com. The NEC 3520A. Have the same drive myself.

FWIW, last time I switched Mac's, I had to restart my Quicksilver multiple times while holding the T key down to get it into Target mode. For some reason, it just didn't want to go there.

I have been looking on NewEgg for an internal DVD drive, searching for the same model that Lateralus bought (NEC 3520A), and my search brings up a lot of different drives with the same model number. They all say they are for PC only. Is this true? Can anyone offer a more specific recommendation? Thanks!!

There are plenty of G3-based Macs with FireWire released after the Yikes G4: the slot-load iMac models, the Pismo PowerBook G3, and most iBooks. All of those are AGP, which coincides with the release of FireWire Target Disk Mode.
