Hey all, this is my first time to MacNN!

I recently got a dual 2.0ghz G5 power mac at work (as did a co-worker). My previous mac was a single processor G5 (1.6ghz)..

Dual 2.0ghz g5
Radeon 9600XT video card
1.5gb RAM (2x 256, 2x 512)
Raptor 74GB SATA HD (10,000rpm)

The only differences between mine and his is that I have the Raptor HD and he has a stock G5 HD.. Also I have Tiger (with all updates) on my HD and he is still running Panther

Last night we swapped our hard drives from our old g5's into our new ones, hooked them up and turned them on. Both started with no problems but I noticed something.. His macs video seemed snappier.. In flash I could tell his video was working much better (scrubbing through timeline was very smooth as was animation).. Whereas mine seemed mostly the same with maybe a little improvement.

Today I noticed some glitchyness to the video, occasionally I will see artifact lines around the edges of windows . it comes and goes rather quickly, just like a flicker and may not come back for a long time..

I installed the latest Mac OSX drivers from ATI's website with no improvement.

Now, I plan on wiping the drive and reinstalling Tiger at some point but currently we're very busy working on a large project so taking time in the middle of the day to format isn't an option..

Anyone have any insight?

Thanks,
Adam

I've seen some comments that Quicktime 7 has some problems playing back video (playing movies), maybe this is what is affecting yours since you have Tiger installed.

The slowness of the video seems kind of universal tho.. I have not tried Quicktime 7 yet.. Actually it was most notable in Flash.. We are a design company so we do lots of work in Flash so this was the first thing I noticed.

Thanks,

Odd. I know that the 400 mhz Sawtooth machine I had was only made bearable
by the Radeon 8500 video card inside the machine. The New G5 2.5 I have is
massively faster but I've tried some of the G5 2.5 and 2.7 machines with nicer
video cards and they DO make a difference. Mainly because of the Quartz Extreme
aspect offloading CPU workload to the video card. Obviously, a more capable video
card is going to handle that workload faster and smoother.

The obvious question is: what was the video card in the single 1.6? It may be, oddly,
a better card.

And yes, a 74 GB 10,000 RPM SATA drive will definetely produce faster results than a
7200 RPM drive even though the 7200 RPM drives generally have more space.
