You'll have to update the firmware of the B&W to support G4s, you can find a link to the firmware on OWC's site. After that, just put the G4 ZIF in and tinker with the jumper bank near the CPU to set the clock multiplier. Then... boot her up.

As long as you mean ZIF and not daughtercard.

A 1GHz G3 is a bunch cheaper than the 1GHz G4.

I've owned both the 1GHz Sonnet G4 and the 1GHz PowerLogix G3. Gotta recommend the PowerLogix hands down. System responsiveness is much better, largely due to the fact that it runs the bus at the full 100MHz whereas the Sonnet drops it to 66MHz. It also has a much larger full speed L2 cache than the Sonnet does, so in addition to allowing the bus to run faster, it has to fall back on it less often.

Plus, G3s are drop-in. The Sonnet G4 requires an unusually proprietary firmware upgrade that many people seem to have had problems with.

When Apple released the first PowerMac G4 (Yikes), they rushed it out with the same logic board as the Yosemite G3. They also released a firmware update gor the G3 which quietly caused the G3s logic board to refuse to boot if you dropped any G4 ZIF onto it. So the upgrade sellers had to issue a firmware downgrade in order to allow G4s to run on these boards.

As was touched upon earlier, all available G4 ZIF upgrades over 600MHz will only run on a 66MHz bus. These also use the later G4 chip variants. The 600MHz G4 ZIF is a 7400 or 7410 which both had more pipelines than the later G4s (Motorola reduced the pipelines in order to bump up the clock speed), so supposedly they are comparable in real world performance to those faster clocked chips. They almost certainly are the best value for money.

You mean "Motorola increased the pipelines in order to bump up the clock speed.

More pipelines are less efficient than less.

Errr... Are you sure? I have never seen a G4 500MHz+ ZIF go for less than $100.

The 533MHz G4 daughtercards from the AGP G4s do sell in that price range though.

this wasn't an upgrade. Supposedlly it's a working pull from a powermac g4 that the "keyboard port went bad" on. I was lucky to find someone selling it for cheap.

The only G4 to ship with a 533 was an AGP G4. Meaning you bought the wrong CPU type.
