I have a customer with an iMac 400 DV that has stopped putting out sound through the internal speakers AND the external jack on the I/O panel. He can still get sound through the headphone jacks on the front. Anyone have any ideas? This is sounding like the logic board to me, but I'm hoping that isn't the case . . .

IIRC the front headphone sockets are wired upstream of the I/O sockets and if you plug into the front sockets it breaks it away from the I/O panel, put another way you only get sound out of the I/O panel if there are no headphones plugged in the front.

Hello, I am I, macman's customer he referred to.
Is it possible that there is a malfunction *at* the front panel headphone sockets - that perhaps the plugs are not releasing properly, when pulled out, and so whatever mechanism switches the sound back and forth, depending on whether headphones are plugged in, cannot work?
So it can't go back to I/O panel because inside the headphone sockets something is maybe stuck, so it *thinks* there are still headphones plugged in?
When I try to do "sound in" through the I/O panel on the side (MIC hole), I can see that sound is coming into the computer, because the level meter in the sound control panel fluctuates. But, as before, no sound out.
Also, yesterday, by pulling a headphone plug "part" of the way out and wiggling it a tiny bit, I was able to get the internal speakers to function just for an instant. As if something were very briefly making contact.
thanks I appreciate both of you's help.

Em

It does sound like (no pun intended) that one of the fton panel sockets is not re-making its internal contacts properly when you remove the plug(s) - I cannot advise you much better as it is long time since I opened my old iMac and I cannot remember whether the sockets were mouunted on the PCB or front panel on wires
Do both front h/p sockets work?
You can osmetimes revise these kinds of sockets by plugging the jack in and out a few times and twisting it the plug to effectively clean the internal contacts.
