I need help with my eMac Hd upgrade. It is a 1Ghz with 768 megs if ram.
here is where i ra into problems. the first thing i did in my process of the hd upgrade is back all of my stuff up. the day before I bought the drive I opened My mac up to get to standard 80 gig HD. then i put it back together and it started fine. so the next day i went to best buy and got a 250 gig WD HD. when i came home i open the eMac just as i did the previous day and replaced the original with the 250 with the jumper set on cable select. So i booted it up and planed to reload max os 10.4 on it but when it booted here is a listing of what happened.
1. there was no sound
2. the dvd drive would not eject by the button or me holding the mouse down
3. the hd didnt spin
4. the screen did come on but it went to a folder with the finder icon and a ?
5. the usb ports did work
After all of that happen i tried to put the 80 back in and it did the same thing. as of now the 250 is in and is having the same problems.
I will post pictures on monday but i will try to get them sooner
Any help given is really appreciated

It may be that you accidentally left some internal cables unplugged. I just did this as well, replacing my 80GB with a 160GB and had to open it back up when the CRT didn't light up. Turns out I had left the cable that plugs from the board to the CRT unplugged. Only other thing I can think is damage to some part of the circuit board or component. But if you were careful that shouldn't be, right?
It would make sense that you'd get a question mark folder icon, because there is no Mac OS on the drive. You need to get an Install disc in somehow. With the Tiger Install CD, you can select Disk Utility, initialize (format) the drive and then go through the install process.
I have been experiencing some system instability after the upgrade. It may just be software/Tiger related (I had Panther on it before the upgrade). I really hate how difficult Apple make what would be a simple upgrade on any other PC (or PowerMac). You don't have to worry about a plethora of screws, or screwing up your computer for that matter on almost any other system. But, that's another topic...

I am about to open the case again and see what is going on
the only cables that have to be disconnected are the power fan airport and ones by the speaker right?
If anyone has any other suggestions i am willing to hear them

I assume you have read this guide, but then if you have already opened the case you may know all about it.

HTH and hope you get it working - I also have an eMac and may one day upgrade it or even rebox it with a couple of HDs since it has 2 IDE busses - Leo Bodnar has an interesting page abou that as well.

Well, depends how you're doing it. Not like there's an official guide.. I went about my own way and unhooked a few more cables. Look carefully. What happened to me is that I reconnected the bottom board and secured it back with the screws, unknowingly hiding a critical cable. Good luck.

Well, if you're having it serviced by Apple it should be taken care of, no? As long as you have your data backed up...
Do you plan on telling them that you tried to install a new HDD yourself? I'm not telling you to lie, but perhaps it is not wise to volunteer too much information, either. I'd put the original back if you are going to take it to Apple.
