I'm wondering if this is a dumb question. We just got cable internet yesterday. It works great on my son's PC. I also have an iMac (350MHz running 9.2.2) that I want to connect. The problem seems to be that the router I bought (Linksys Wired BEFSR41) doesn't recognize my iMac (the little light does not come on when they are connected). The cable is fine; we tried it with the PC. It may be that there is something wrong with the network plug on the iMac. My dumb question (that occurred to me after I'd packed up the router to be returned) is could there be something simple like turning on some extension(s) on the iMac? I've never used any of the networking features on that machine as we have been limited to dial-up since it was purchased about 5 years ago.

I have someone coming tomorrow to see about using a wireless connection. I was told after I bought this iMac that it could not do wireless. Maybe things have changed or maybe that person was mistaken (or maybe I misunderstood them). The person I have coming tomorrow said there is no way to just replace the plug-in on the iMac as it is part of the motherboard (bad feature, if you ask me....).

This seems to be a really good forum. I'm glad I found it! Thank you for any help.

Your iMac does support the Apple's airport wireless card. It requires an adapter which can be a bit hard to find these days...

I don't know much about Mac OS 9, so I'll leave the ethernet issue to someone else... It might just be a setup issue....

Make sure you have changed these settings in your TCP/IP control panel: Set the "input" to built in ethernet (you might have had it set to built in modem) and change the other thing you can change to "using DHCP". Sorry this is scrambled but I would have to restart in OS 9 to be able to see this control panel. Post again if you don't figure this out and I'll restart in OS 9 in the meantime.

After you do this an IP address, etc. should pop up automatically after a few moments.

Dear Pat & Val,

It was a set up thing! All is working now. I had someone prepared to add an Airport card but it wasn't necessary. Thank you for your replies!
