Hi there!
I am new for all this Mac thing. Next week I must decide, what video card to put in brand new G5 powermac. Well, call me lucky bastard, but (not without a great fight from my side) this machine will buy my organisation where I work. Luckily, my boss isn't bright in computers, so i put on counter the best piece of Mac, I could make - almost all is from the best (except 2,5G instead of 8G and 23'' instead of 30").
The question is, that (as money isn't an issue here) I want to get the best video card possible. I read somewhere, that nVidia cards, even if numbers ar smaller than ones of ATI, works better in Adobe stuff and FinalCut.
Thanx

The two best cards on the market today are the 6800 and the X800, which you would have found out about if you used the search button. You'd also have discovered that the 6800 is very noisy, and the X800 is much quieter. You'd also have discovered that EITHER card is basically totally pointless unless you're a gamer or doing 3d work. If you're only doing video editing and photoshop work, NEITHER card will speed up your work, or have any noticeable improvement.

Thanx.
Yes, i used "search" button here, and in other places. Info is scattered pretty much, so, apart from general idea i thought it would be ok, if i ask this question again, but with specifying the aim, of particular work, comp will be doing. sorry - i don't want to annoy anyone.

ok - then i'll stop thinking about that... maybe, heh. that just is the one of two questions I was concerned. the second one is - will 2,5ram will be enough for fast working - waiting just disturbes me, and i'm not nervous person.

Welceome. Most posters are not like the person who answered your post so don't let it put you off returning.

We do encourage the use of Search but everyone was new once

Enjoy your new Macintosh!

I'd just get the cheapest one if I were you. Again, unless you're into gaming or 3d work, a 6800 or X800 will BOTH be overkill, useless, and make your machine quite a bit noisier. The 9650 uses a passive heatsink, so it does not have a fan...meaning... it makes NO noise. From what it sounds like you're going to be doing (adobe, final cut), you will not need a powerful 3d video card.

Actually, as soon as an application uses CoreImage any faster graphics adaptor will result in faster drawings on the screen. Regardless if it's 2D or 3D.

Indeed, this is true.
CoreImage apps will definitely make use of faster GPUs with more ram
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

With money not an issue, get the best video card you want. Never know when you might need to "stress test" your G5 with some Doom3 action.

The 6800 takes up two slots, while the X850XT takes up one. Since the 3D video performance isn't your priority, I'd save the expansion slot regardless of which card is slightly faster on games.

If you think you might run two 30" displays in the near future, you'd want to get the nVidia 6800 - it will drive two 30" displays. The ATi X850 XT can only drive one 30" and one normal display. If you plan to drive two 30" displays a couple years in the future, don't worry about it now. There will be far better video cards available by then.

Thanx to all. Well, then I'll stick with X850XT, I guess, couse I ain't planning any second display in near future. Even If I would want it - my boss wouldn't uderstand that "joke", heh.
