I've just ordered a new iMac to replace my old PC. I have about 30GB of mp3s that I want to transfer from my PC to my new iMac when it comes in. what is the best way to do this? I'll have them both plugged into a router, so I can setup a webserver, or ftp server on the PC, and download the mp3s from the PC to the iMac, but is this the best way?

Just enable file sharing on both (really just the one you're connecting too), from the Mac connect locate the servers icon which will contain the Windows box and then start transfering. :-)

haulin_oats:

After enabling Windows and File Sharing in System Preferences, enable file sharing on the Windows drive where you files are located (in this case, your music). It's default sharing name will be the drive letter followed by the dollar sign. Also, double-click on Windows Firewall in the Control panel, click on the Exclusions tab, and make sure "File Sharing" is check-marked.

On the Windows PC, go to Start Menu, Run, type in "cmd," press enter, and in the window that opens up, type in "ipconfig" and press enter. Note the code next to "IP Address...". Copy it down.

On your Mac, bring up the Finder, click the Go menu, and click Connect to Server...

Type: "smb://(INSERT WINDOWS IP ADDRESS HERE)/(DRIVE LETTER)$"

Press enter. If it asks you for a username and password, type in the administrator username and password for your Windows machine. Press enter, and your Mac will connect to your Windows hard drive. You can then drag and drop files onto your Mac hard drive.

While the network drive will appear as X$ in the Finder sidebar and on your desktop, the connection do the network drive will disappear once you log off or shut down. But, your Mac will remember the connection in the Connect to Server... dialog, so you can easily reconnect.

Hope that helps.
