hey
i was just curious if y'all could give me some feedback on the true performance difference between 1 gig vs 1.5 gigs of RAM on an iMac. I have a recently purchased new 20" 2.0 w/ the store included 512.

i'd like to make this thing sing on daily functions (i.e. beachball free/quick dashboard updates, etc) and be able to happily handle photo editing, etc.

so i just hopped over to crucial and basically the price breakdown is like this:

512 MB stick: US $65.91
1 GB stick: US $129.77

that's a pretty healthy price difference, and so i'm wondering if the jump from 1 to 1.5 is worth it/as startling as just jumping from 512

thanks a bunch.

I run 1gb on my 20" and it FLIES. I can't imagine an extra 512 making a huge difference. I would just go with another 512 stick, I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

$129 is waayy more than you have to pay for 1GB. They're $80 at newegg.com. At that price, you might as well just get another gig. you can never have too much RAM.

I have 1gb in my iMac G5 2.0ghz 17". Most of the time I have Safari, Mail, Photoshop CS, iTunes, iPulse, plus a few other apps and LOADS of haxies running. I also sometimes play UT2004, which runs great.

According to iPulse, I very rarely use more than 75% RAM, that is to say at least 25% is usually completely free - even when I have 10 or more CPU intensive apps open at once.

When I bought this iMac in May, I had planned to get another 1gb stick at a later date, but I really don't think my system is going to ever really benefit from it.

I would recommend you check out how much RAM you actually use first, to see if it could do with improving before you shell out any cash.
