Hi

I have a major problem with my dual 1ghz, 1mb ram G4.

After a shutdown or just on a restart it freezes after booting up. The desktop appears and after two mins or so I get the crashed text telling me to restart, or sometimes a load of garbled text running from top left of the screen. The only way to boot up is to press the emergency restart button. After 4 or 5 goes it is then fine and I get no more problems as long as the computer is not shutdown again or restarted.

After a particularly bad episode where it could not even get to the desktop screen and just never booted, I decided to wipe the disk and reinstall the system from scratch. I got rid of all
random demos of apps and other potentially buggy things and basically began again, as if it was a brand new factory model. However, I still get the same problem.

This is my every morning so please can anyone help before my head explodes.

thanks in advance
Sam

Did you do a low-level format - could be some boot-sector corruption?

Alternatively . . .

Can you start up from the OS X installer CD without issues?

Can you start up in Safe mode (immediately after start-up chime, hold down the 's' key)?

Can you remove all your RAM except for 1 stick, and try them one at a time . . .

Sounds like bad RAM, or even a bad kernel extension (driver). Disconnect all 3rd party devices, and try swapping out the RAM. That should isolate the problem.
