I knew I would regret this decision one day, but when I bought my 17" 1 GHz iMac G4 3 years ago, I did not get it with Bluetooth installed. Well, now I would like to put Bluetooth in my iMac. I know that I could just get a USB Bluetooth dongle, but I was wondering if it was possible to install the internal Bluetooth module after the fact, and if so, how would you go about doing it. I have no problems with mucking about the inside of my iMac.

Thanks!

I am in a similar situation with my G4 800 iMac. I recently bought a nifty little bluetooth headset and dongle to improve my internet telephony experience (What? You're still paying phone bills?) but during installation I got the message "headsets not supported" in the Bluetooth set-up assistant. The dongle was happily flashing but it couldn't connect with the headset. Very frustrating, and so I have just put the headset away in a draw until I buy a (ideally RevC) G5 iMac. Any upgrade info would be appreciated here too...

You need to get hold of the bluetooth dongle from DLink - once plugged in, it's identical to the inbuilt bluetooth module. Apple even things it's internal and updates it with Apple Update.

I tried a different make before - works fine with some peripherals but not all, ie couldn't connect a mouse and a keyboard at the same time, but both would work separately.

Dlink DB-122 I seem to recall.

Others will be able to correct me I'm sure about the model.

I believe wilburpan is asking about the INTERNAL Bluetooth module, not any external additions.

I don't know where you can get one but if you really want ask around your local Apple store or resellers if they are willing to order the part for you. You might even have to pay more, I'm not sure. It might even be very difficult to get.

If you do manage to get it, you can follow the instructions from the Service Manual for your iMac (which is prooving very difficult for me to find for you right now... sorry...).

You're right of course ! Sorry - I meant to offer it as an alternative - which is a third of the price.

When I had my G4 last year I spent a bit of time digging then just thought - what the hell, it's behind the machine anyway.

Sorry !
