I've been trying to help a friend with her iMac G4 1.25Ghz. Shortly after booting up it quits and won't start up again until it has cooled down for awhile. Even booting it into Firewire target disk mode to rescue her data, it will just die after about five minutes. The fan keeps running but that is all.

Does this sound like a bad logic board? I've tried all the usual software approaches, zapping PRAM, booting from CD, etc. It seems to quit as soon as it warms up, pretty quickly if you start doing much with it. Until the screen goes black, all seems normal.

I've told her I think a trip to the repair shop is in order but she was hoping there was an easier cheaper answer. It's out of warranty.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think it's the power supply because the fan continues to run after the computer quits working. I don't think it's the hard drive because it seems like it would still start up from the install DVD even if the hard drive was bad, which it doesn't. I think she's off to Denver this weekend to get an estimate for repair.

Just to follow up, it's a bad logic board. Repair estimate $685. She wishes she hadn't bought an all-in-one. The repair will cost more than the computer is worth, but she's going though with it. Can't buy a mini and connect it to her useless iMac monitor.
