I'm soon planning on attempting to repair what appears to be a burn out flyback transformer in a bondi imac 233

I have read and studied over and over the procedure for avoiding electrical shock

I was just wondering - that If you wore electrical gloves throughout the procedure - would they protect you from the crt if for some reason I fail to discharge it?

Seriously, this is a good way to get your name in the paper-in the obituaries. A flyback transformer on a CRT is not something you can replace as easily as a burnt out fuse. Andn if you have to ask questions about things like the safety of the procedure, you probably don't have anywhere near the experience and expertise needed to do the job safely. This is not a knock against you-I've been an electronics technician for over 25 years, I've dealt with extremely high voltages on a regular basis, and I would NOT attempt this myself. The guts of a CRT are a specialist area because things get jammed in so tightly and so close together, so one tiny slip and you can go from straight hair to curly in microsecends. I am 100% serious about this. Have a PROFESSIONAL do the work! Please!

The problem with that is hiring a professional to do it costs more than the computer is worth! I was in the same boat with my iMac 333 and ended up dumping it. Lesson learned: never buy another all-in-one.

Well . . .. I read all about discharging the CRT, and have been working on iMacs for a few years now with no problems. I never take a CRT apart, but I remove and replace them all the time. The most important thing that I have found is that you need to ensure you don't have the computer plugged in, and then wait 30 minutes to an hour before you even discharge the CRT. There is information on how to do this on the web. As for replacing the FBT, I have NOT tried to do that. It is on the video board, and my experience is that you should just find an iMac that has a good PAV board and swap. In fact, the easiest thing to do is just buy another 333 and swap hard drives. In fact, why not move up to a slot-loader? If you find a 333 out there that is listed as needing repair, but with a working video board, that would be an option as well.
