Hey Mac community
I have an old imac that I no longer use and want to give to a friend who does not have a computer. They need to get network access though, and the ethernet port on the imac (with os 8.5) no longer works. It is just dead. Does anyone have any help on why it may not work. I formated and reinstalled the OS, and it still does not work. What I would like is if anyone knows of a USB to ethernet adapter that would work on 8.5. I find a ton with windows support, but none with even osx support. I would really like to get this working, because this can put use to a good computer that would otherwise go to the graveyard. I would be thankful for any suggestions.
Thanks very much
Brian Stevens

Have you ever used the ethernet port on it before? I hardly ever used ethernet when I used OS8/9 but I think I remember it was not quite as intuitive (IMHO) to set active as it is in OSX. This may sound a rude question, but are you sure you are stting it up correctly? i.e. have you done it before?

No, no insult taken at all. I bought this through craigs list for an MP3 player, and that is a very correct assumption. I will look into this now. The old man who owned it before me said he wasn't able to connect his highspeed internet. I assumed that that meant it didn't work. However I will look into turning it on. I as well use OSX, so I am used to that.
Thanks so much
Brian

It's probably a problem with the physical connection between ethernet cable and ethernet jack.

This summer I had the opportunity to hookup a 233 Mhz iMac with OS 8.5 and an ethernet port, and it connected fine to my cable modem. I can't remember the settings, but I do seem to remember that I didn't have to do much to get it to work.
Did you update the firmware? I do remember doing that. Perhaps that would help.

iMacs are notorious for dead ethernet ports - I have a DV with a dead ethernet port.

Obviously check to see if it forks. If it does, you're in luck. Other than that, how about looking at getting it fixed. I don't know if it's a big process or just popping off the cover & replacing a piece. Dont' know how much it would cost either, but I can't imagine that an ethernet jack would be very expensive. The other thing that comes to mind (if you can't find a USB ethernet solution) is going with a wireless router & a USB 802.11b/g adapter for the imac.
