My mother has a 1st gen iMac, with System 8.6 on it. Somehow, she's managed to frag her modem. I spent a good three hours working on determining the problem, and alas, found no solution.
My question is: are there any usb modems that I could buy for her iMac? She really doesn't want to replace the iMac, and she's not that wonderful with computers anyway.
Thanks!

Would your mother not appreciate a DSL or cable connection instead? Or maybe she can freely access a neighbor's wireless network? Just giving out options that would improve her surfing experience.

She's in an old folks home. No choice but dialup. She has her Earthlink account, which she loves, so, that's how it's got to be. Sucks, yes.

I don't know what the logistics are like with this, but if she has a phone line there's a good chance she can get DSL.

Get the modem replaced. Strangely enough it's about the only thing not soldered to the logic board.

Replace the modem. It's easy. The aftermarket modems sold for use inside of the first B&W G3 are the same thing and will practcally drop right in (and are relatvely cheap). Do a search on eBay; there used to be dozens for sale there. While you are in there, drop in a bigger HD, more memory and OS X. She'll really love her iMac then.
