Okay... I just ordered a 2.7Ghz G5 and order status says it has been sent to manufacturing. However, when I just checked, the ship times on 2.7 systems have changed from 1-2 business days to 2-3 weeks!

WTF?

The 2.3 and 2.0 systems are still 1-2 days (or something like that). PLEASE don't tell me that they’re gonna release a 3.0Ghz model the day after they ship my 2.7. That would be too big a kick in the cubes after waiting so long to order a new Mac.

Anyone got any dirt on this? Please tell me it’s just a parts shortage or an earthquake or a meteor the size of Guam hurling towards the earth. Anything but a faster model to be released moments after my 2.7 ships.

So what's the skinny?

Bueller? Bueller?

I wouldn't worry about it, but who knows. The 2.7 uses liquid cooling, so if for whatever reason they're constrained on the procs, it would delay things. I don't think it's reason to worry if 2.7's shipping times is higher. Usually when there's a bump across the board, all the machines move to 7-10 days.

Congratulations on your purchase, crooner. You're getting one of the final, most powerful Macs that will ever be produced before Apple betrays us all and becomes a Dell wannabe. Don't worry about the slip in the shipping date - it will be there soon enough.

Let me guess... you're one of "those people" who bought the PowerPC line so thoroughly that you're convinced that Apple is turning its back on an eternally superior architecture to make $200 boxes. Sorry, but I'd like to see Apple's shipping products (not just their developer kits) rather than make assumptions.

As far as the issue at hand, the delays are probably a parts shortage of either the CPUs or cooling systems. It'll only be a hint of an impending update if the rest of the lineup follows suit.

Commodus, nope, I'm not a MacIntel naysayer by any means. In fact, I think it’ll be a great move on Apple's part in both the short term and long term. I'm getting the G5 for a few reasons but chief among them are:

1) My dual 1Ghz QuickSilver is developing some hardware issues and I don't want to sink money into a four year old Mac.

2) Buying a new G5 at this time fits into my (up until now) usual pattern of getting a new Mac every 3-4 years. Plus, I don't want to be getting rev. A MacIntel. I've been on the cutting edge many times before and don't feel like being cannon fodder for a transition of this magnitude. That being said, sometime in 2008, when MacIntels are blazing along with all the bugs worked out, I'll be thrilled to get one.

'Nuff said.

Now then... my dual 2.7 was supposed to arrive today. Lo and behold, I got the e-mail from Apple explaining that the new ship date is now 8/26. While I'm bummed that I have to wait, I'd be less than truthful if I said I wasn't in some way a bit relieved. At lest now I'll now that I’ll be getting whatever revised parts (if any) are to be added, plus it gives me time to listen for any rumblings of a possible speed bump announcement at the Paris expo. So, like I said, it’s a small disappointment, but one I can live with.

Naturally, if anyone hears anything, please post any skinny.

Is that they're running out of grape juice which operates the cooling system.

They can't just use any grapes!

Trust me, it will be worth the wait. I realize it is frustrating to have to wait but
these things occur.

I *think* I understand a little bit of some of the things you said.

As far as discounts on stuff, on the other hand, you lost me. The main thing that I get is the feeling that you’re offering me some console so I thank you.

Don't take this the wrong way - please - but in the future... a little punctuation goes a long way.

And good luck with your mini... whenever you choose to disclose it's whereabouts.

Ah HA!
Just checked the Apple Store and the 2-3 weeks wait time for the 2.7 G5 has changed to the (sometimes) all telling 7-10 days!

The other models still say same business day, but they don't use the grape juice cooling system, so methinks a teeny weeny speed bump may be in order. I'm glad my order got delayed. But with my luck, my G5 will likely have the last pair of 2.7 chips laying around in the schnook bin before they start slapping in the 3.X Ghz ones.

Pray for me, my comrades.

Note to admins: "schnook" is not profanity. I chose it carefully. I wanted to use schm**k but decided that one rides the fine line too much. I hope "schnook" makes it past your diligent standards.

To argue that the PowerPC architecture is NOT superior to x86 shows your ignorance. Superiority of ISA was never an issue for debate. Almost any processor architecture developed in the last 20 years is superior to x86.

You'll probably get your machine before Apple even says it has shipped. Relax.
