Hi,
I am currently thinking of upgrading my iMac G3 500 indigo (summer 2001 release) and I have a few concerns about the cooling issue. As 5400 rpm hardrives hard to find, I plan to install a 7200 rpm/80Go/8mo cache but I would also like to place a little fan under the cooling grid (just under the handle) and that's what bodering me because I don't know how to plug it. I'm sure someone has already try that but did he succeed and where did he plug it?
Thanks

Fit issues aside, I would just use a molex Y splitter & split the original hard drive molex to the drive/fan

That sounds "not a bad idea" I will check if I can do what I want with that solution
Thanks

I did the exact same upgrade to the exact computer and it has been fine, I too considered putting in a fan, I posted here about it as a matter of fact, and I have found that there is really no need, don't worry about it.

The first 7200 rpm drives did use more power and therefore produce more heat than the 5400rpm ones. More recent ones use less power, produce less heat and are more tolerant of the higher temps. Also I never had a problem with an IBM Deskstar and later Maxtor someting-or-other drive in my iMac DV.

I don't think a fan is even necessary. A fews months ago I upgraded my original stock 10 gb to a 120 GB running at 7200 rpm in my iMac G3 400. Runs fine and heat is not an issue. I tell ya, it's nice too! All that extra space. And to think I used a 10 gb HD for nearly 5 years. Jeeeesh!
