Hi,
Before you say anything, I've searched on the the thread and can't find anything that's helped so here's my problem...
iMacG4 Superdrive won't get beyond the grey apple screen on startup.
If I try and boot from a CD the same thing happens.
It won't let me boot into single user mode
It won't let me boot with the shift key down
The HD is fine, and I can boot another G4 iMac using the problem G4 in Target Disk mode.
The iMac was running 10.3.9 when this issue started, I've done a archive and install with it in target disk mode and it now has tiger on it, but still the same problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Adam

Try booting with the option key down. This will give a selection of disk boots. If no options appear then you have problems.
Keep it simple at first. You may need to boot off a disk utilty program. The 'DiskWarrior' utility has saved my butt many times.
Firewire Target mode is great when it works properly, but from my experience it can cause problems such as you describe. I have a 1Ghz iMac G4 with a firewire attachment to my old 366Mhz 'Clam Shell' iBook.
If you keep the computers linked, and have any shared drives, the operating system on each can exhibit problems, as each computer will seem to try sort out the proper connection protocol, and sometimes get confused.
You need to be more specific as to how your computers are linked.

You have a startup CD inserted, and you're holding down the C key when you startup, but it fails to boot? Do you have anything connected other than your keyboard and mouse? If so, it sounds like there's a hardware issue. Did you do anything to the system prior to this occurrence? If I had to troubleshoot your Mac, I would first take out any third party RAM.

I think there were two separate issues...
Firstly, the boot disk had become corrupt, and so wouldn't start up.
Secondly, the optical drive wouldn't read the CD
I've re-formatted and re-installed the iMac via Target Disk mode and it works fine now, but I still can't get it to boot from, or even read the CD I was using, although it works fine with other CD's.
I don't think the DVD drive liked the CDR media I had used.
Anyway, All fixed now, but thanks for your suggestions.
