Hey guys,

ok, so I've noticed a buzzing noise coming from the power supply of my 20" rev. A iMac G5.

the sound is only really noticable if the LCD's brightness is on brightest. i could actually hear the buzzing get louder and softer and louder and softer as i adjusted the brightness from brighter to darker to brighter to darker under the display options. So I'm assuming that the power supply is getting old, not being able to support the amount of power the 20" LCD requires to stay on the highest brightness level.

So i took off the back casing and started up the iMac just to make sure the sound was coming from the power supply. And i was right, it was coming from the power supply.

Is this covered under warrenty. Can i get my power supply replaced? Will apple send me a replacement power supply, i can replace it myself, i've seen the instructions on apple's website. just don't want to wait 2 weeks for my apple store to replace something that takes 15min.

I would call Apple and start up a case. I'm running into an issue with my Rev. A 20" iMac G5 that they believe is the power supply as well. At one point I thought I heard sizzling coming from the power supply area, except my iMac was off at the time.

Apple will send you a new power supply. The buzzing is a known issue that Apple has yet to correct.

to the original poster, how long have you had your iMac for. I've had mine for 7months and I dread the day the same thing happens to my iMac and then I will have had enough of Macs. I think.

i've had mine a couple of days.

I bought the rev. A 20" 1.8GHz iMac G5 for $999 open box at the store. It was a demo unit, but the manager allowed me to open the box to make sure the condition of the iMac was to my approval. To my surprise, the iMac was in perfect condition, not a single scratch, not a single dead pixel, nothing wrong. I think i only missed out on the buzzing power supply because of the loud music in the store.

So yea, i figured $999 for a beautiful 20" machine that doesn't have any cosmetic flaws, passed all of apple's tests, and has a 1 year warrenty, that ain't a bad deal.

and realistically, the buzzing power supply isn't gonna kill me. but if fixin' it is free of charge, i'mma sure as hell gonna try ta fix it.

I'll let you'll know if the buzzing goes away when i drop the new power supply in. They're sending me the power supply that they use for the rev. B 20" iMacs. And to my knowledge, that's the only iMac G5 that is absolutely silent.

Wish me luck!
