hey everyone,

I was wondering, if there was a way to use the old B&W G3 iMac 350mhz as a monitor with a Mac Mini? Is this feasible with the right adaptors? Or rather can a B&W G3 iMac be used as a monitor? pretty much the same question.

thanks.

I believe on very early iMacs the video was connected internally using a standard VGA connector that could be undone. However, how would you keep the screen powered on? Personally I wouldn't want to mess with a Mac that has a CRT in it due to the high voltages present even when unplugged.

I didn't think of that...

but I assume I could have it plugged in and switch to the macmini while the iMac was running, kind of liek switching back and forth between more than one computer/servers whiel using one monitor, though I would need a switcher. Perhaps it'd just be cheaper to buy a monitot w. th emini.

thanks.

Good idea to buy the new monitor - you can get a 15" LCD <$200 or a 17" CRT <$125 so there is little point to drilling holes in an iMac and trying to snake the VGA signal out to a swithbox and back in --- although the project has some kind of perverse attraction to it.... :-)

You're right about the connector on the early (tray-loading) iMacs. The iMac 350 was a slot-loader and had a different monitor connector than a regular VGA style plug.
