Weird one here...
Just got and setup my new dual 2.7Ghz G5. This thing kicks arse. One oddity, however:

Whenever I restart or cold boot, the optical tray opens, even if I'm holding down the "C" key to boot from a bootable CD/DVD - OR - if I have selected the CD/DVD as the startup volume in the Startup Disk Preferences.

Right now the only way I can boot from an optical disk is to boot holding down the Option key and then select the disk. Annoying to say the least.

Any ideas as to which preferences file(s) I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Is anything resting on top of your mouse by chance?

First thing I thought of...

Alas, no... it's not the mouse trick. How I wish...

Hi,

I had EXACTLY the same problem with a G5 at work.

Turns out the guy had a HP wireless mouse and it was the USB reciever that was plugged into the G5 that was causing the problem – it seemed like it was giving a mouse-button-down type command which caused the tray to eject.

So, I would try unplugging your USB devices and seeing if this helps. Then plugs them back in one at a time to see which is the culprit.

Hope this helps.

This topic seems to come up every few months (happened to me a while back). The culprit was a third-party USB device in my case, and typically is for others as well.

Yep. That was it.
I was using the super-cool and long discontinued Special Edition White Intellimouse Explorer from our pals at Microsoft. As soon as I disconnected the receiver and plugged in the standard, wired Apple mouse, the tray stayed closed and would allow booting from an optical disk. I then tried a Kensington wireless mouse that used the same basic "system" as the Microsoft mouse (a USB receiver and separate mouse) and this one seems to be playing nice with the system. After wasting hours trying various file hunting and elimination techniques, I was glad to find such an easy fix. I may still try replacing the batteries in the White MS mouse to see if that helps, as it matches my Matias Tactile Pro Keyboard perfectly, but the Kensington's silver appearance matches my G5 perfectly.

Yep.

Although in a very stealth-like manner.
