I have a 4 hour old Powermac DP 2.0. I bought a color iPod as well with the educational rebate. I have burned about 4 albums to iTunes and went to sync up the iPod. I used the cable it shipped with, plugged into the front USB port - and it recognizes the iPod but I got a "Unknown error on disk (-36)" I followed the instructions on Apple's troubleshooting site, including resetting my iPod to factory specs - still plugged in up front. Didn't make a difference. No sync.

I happen to have a firewire / USB Y iPod cable from a gen 3 iPod - I connected that to the front - the iPod sync'd just fine. I burned another album, reconnected the iPod using the USB port on the Y cable - the Mac recognized it, and it showed up on my desktop (and I could browse folders) but iTunes did not - and it locked up until I would disconnect the iPod (did this several times including after a reboot)

I then plugged the original USB cable from the color iPod in the back USB port - and it sync'd the new album just fine.

In setting up this new Mac - I also tranferred about 4 gb of pictures from an external USB drive that was connected to the front port with no problems.

Obviously this looks like a bad USB port on the front - although again, the external drive worked fine. My questions are:

** Is the front port full power - or is there anything different with the front USB that would keep it from acting like the back ports?

** What are my options regarding repair? Am I looking at having to ship this Mac back to Apple? The closest Apple store is in KC (3 hours from me) although we have a CompUSA with an Apple store an hour away.

** Anything I can try DIY? Could it be a card or something that might be loose? I've not opened the inside so I'm not sure what I will find....

Bought the PM direct from Apple - it arrived today - I love it except for this.....

Thanks for any help

I would get on the phone with Apple right away and explain the problem, unless you have an Apple Store nearby.

Use firewire. I don't know why but I can't stand the USB port with iPods. If you have an Apple store bring it in right away, they should swap you out a new machine. That is what I would expect. Drive the 3 hours to the Apple store... call them ahead of time and explain you have a long trip and talk the issue through with a genius and a manager so they are all on the same page when you get there.

Okay - I like the swap out idea - but I have a BTO system w/ a 256mg video card, BT, AP and 1gb ram. Are they going to be able to swap me that machine? If they can, why did I wait 2.5 weeks to get my system when i could have driven to KC and picked it up on site? (did I say that last outloud?)

Or just do it the "official" way by logging into the Apple retail website the same calendar date and putting yourself in line from home. (You can add a note with your expected arrival time so that if you arrive after your automatically-generated time arrives, you won't lose your spot.)

That's true, but if it were 'me', I'm also calling them up and insuring I'm not making a 3 hour trip only to be told, I'm going to have to leave the machine with them. I don't like that sort of talk... and I don't accept it much of the time. You see, I'm one of those tough customers that when I buy a machine, I expect it to work for at least the first two weeks or else I expect a new one as a swap. Further more, I expect them to back up my stuff and transfer it for free while I wait. So, I call and have them clear a time slot to allow them to do just that while I sit at the genius bar and drink the Latte I brought...

Good advice though to sign in online as well though. I missed that one in my post.
