In "making it quick" you seem to have left out a few words, I have no idea what your actual problem is. Also, you're going to have to tell us what computer you are using. If it's the one in your sig, say so, we're not psychic.

sorry about that.

ive got 2 System folders on my HD. One is a working OS 9, the other, the installation program on the panther install disc 1. My mac boots to the unusable panther install and doesnt do anything. My OS 9 bootable disc wont work because i cleaned it with a cd cleaner. So, when i turn on my mac, it goes to the installation program on my HD (That displays the apple sign, then the broken system folder sign and does no more.) and doesnt go to my working os 9 system. I cant boot from the os 9 cd and if i boot to the panther cd, it just freezes everything if it does anything to do with the hard drive (like disk utility, startup disk, panther destination install)

so basically, i cant do anything (Apart from go to a freezing panther install cd)

but, i can go to open firmware.

so, what i need, is commands i can use to boot it into my OS 9 system or to delete my broken OS X panther install.

Today, i was running the panther install on the cd. it got to the destination stage, the cd started loading, then the GUI started dissapearing until it was only blue, and then a spinnging grey bar thing kept turning round and my mac did nothing.

I had something similar once and it turn out one of my RAM modules was bad.

Try removing one and retrying - no promises though.

I would also try different ram as os x is picky with ram.

Your hard drive does sound rather suspect though.
If you're really desperate you could try disconnecting it and see whether things get any further.

Also, if you have access to another mac you can get an external case for that hard drive, and use your other mac to either delete the broken system folder or do a good install of Panther.

I'm confused. Are you booting from the Panther install CD by holding down the 'C' key when you boot? That's the correct procedure. Then you should be able to install Panther.

I still didn't see what kind of Mac you have. Modern Macs can't boot to OS 9. What do you have?

Another idea - is your mac the one in your sig with a 6GB drive? If this is the case it is possible with a full install of OS9 and OSX on it you may have insufficient space left on the HD for the swap file.

It might be my RAM... My iMac always froze before i increased the disk cache in the memory c.p.

I ran the disk first aid on the the panther cd and it said i had minor volume header errors ( 0, 1) so i repaired.

I got to 10% of checking my destination disk on the panther cd but then it froze.

I don't think you can download the hardware test cd.
There is memtest but you need mac os x to be able to run it.
There may be a classic version around somewhere on the internet.

Do you have any spare hard drives? 6gb isn't really enough to install os x and os 9 together so you'll probably need a bigger one. Getting another hard drive will also enable you to see if you can get any further.
A new drive would need to be formatted to HFS (which can be done from the panther CD) and the jumpers set to master.

A useless disclaimer, since practically nobody will have seen this thread. Just be a good sport when you post questions and specify what Mac you're referring to.
