PowerMac won't boot

I have a PowerMac Dual 533. Recently we had a power outtage, and now the Mac now will not start up. When I press the power button on the front of the tower, it lights up so long as it is depressed, but when I remove my finger, the light fades. Holding in the power button does nothing. There is no other response from the computer that I can see.

The computer is on a surge protector, and none of the other devices on the surge protector show any damage. I haven't shut down the Mac in probably 6 months, although I have restarted it when installing updates. I don't know what other information would be helpful.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong with the computer, and anything that I could try to get it to boot up? I wasn't really planning on replacing the computer for some time yet, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

PM

The actual switch might broken. Or it might be that old mainstay, a PRAM battery that has gone dead. You could try replacing it - check inside the machine for the exact type, but it's usually a 3.6 V Lithium battery.

I had to reset the power management unit. There is a small button in the case located next to the battery that you mentioned. Unplugging the computer, pressing that button a single time, waiting 10 seconds, and plugging the computer back in and pressing the power button was what was required to get it working.

Thanks for your response.

This has happened to my Quicksilver DP800 a few times. Your procedure is exactly what you should do.

Warning: do NOT EVER press the CUDA switch (that little button on the mobo) twice in a row. You can crash the PMU and the computer will not ever restart. (At least, that is what I have read.)
