Hello All,

I have an interesting situation, I have a 30" apple display which only works on the G5. I talk to apple yesterday and found out that technically the display may work a G4 with ddl video card (AGP version). the reason why I am not going to buy a G5 is because of the pending intel macs.

Has anyone tried putting the monitor on a G4?

My alternative is to an pc ( which I'd rather not do)

Thanks for any help,

Mac_happy

ATI has announced a dual-DVI Radeon 9600 Pro for the G4s. Should be shipping soon.

And the Intel Power Macs aren't going to hit the street until the middle of 2007 or later. Why are you waiting?

I would follow Lateralu's advice, the upcoming ATI 9600 Pro 256 MB is all you need to drive the 30 inches Apple Display with your PowerMac G4. There is a topic about that card here .

You can also probably get a 9650 and do the tape mod on it since it uses the same interface as the 9600xt did.

I'd just get a G5 now... the Intel PowerMacs are like... almost two years off if not more.

I checked with ATI Tech support they DO NOT MAKE A DUAL_DVI card for the G4. The 9600 Pro has one DVI connect and one VGA connection. the 30" Apple display has two DVI cables that need to be connected.

Thanks Anyway.

No, the 30" doesn't have two DVI cables that need to be connected. It has one cable that needs a dual-link DVI port for it to work. The new 9600 pro has a dual-link port, which will drive the 30" display.

You will be waiting two years for Mactel Powermacs, at a minimum. I'd get just a dual G5 now
like a lot of us have realizing these machines will do the job for at least two years and beyond.

I would get yourself that videocard when it comes out and keep running that G4, no reason to get a G5 for a simple 2 year or less life. Wait until the new Intel PM's come out, you will be glad you waited.

So... G5s are suddenly going to stop working when the Intel Power Macs ship?

Oh right... cause I forgot the new Power Macs will have amazing features that actually cause G5s within a 5 mile radius to explode... you wouldn't want to have G5 when the newer machines come out... it'd be embarrassing to have your Power Mac explode I guess...

Who says he has to get a Mactel as soon as they come out? He could just keep using the G5 for a while. You're right, there is little economic sense in buying a computer for a short two year life, so use it for three years. Shebus.

Wow, talk about some flamed responses, lol. Relax people, if he is like most of us he will probably go into geek mode when the new UBER Intel Powermacs come out and like all of us will think of ways or reasons to get it when it does. Hense the 2 years or less of life comment. Im being real here, if I were to buy a brand new one now in a few years I KNOW I would find a way to get the new one just cause I wanted it.

Myself Im going to sell off my iMac and iBook Clamshell soon and get myself either a Powermac G4 or more modern iBook, still not sure what I want but there you are.

Relax people, unless he has apps that NEED a G5, what is the reason to upgrade?
