I've noticed that the iMac has some issues in this area but I haven't found anything that is similar to my problem....
For some reason, whenever I start to play Starcraft 1.13 (since updating to OS X.4.2) the computer will simply go to sleep about 3 minutes into the game. You can wake it, but then it sleeeps again a few seconds later, etc, etc.
So, I tried playing Civ III to see if I could reproduce the problem with another game (because I can't in any other app...) and it had the same issue...
iMac 1.8ghz, 1gig ram, 5200 card
Anyone have an idea?
Thanks.

I was having the same issue with my Rev. A 20" iMac G5. My CPU temps were hitting 90C so the iMac was putting itself to sleep to keep from burning up. I did an SMU reset (if you have a Rev. A model you have to take the back off and push a button on the motherboard while it's plugged in) and that seems to have cured the problem for now. My CPU temps still clock around 85C though.
Try an SMU reset, the instructions can be found here: --> http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301283

After a few days, the SMU reset is doing the trick anymore.
The website you show only refers to problems of scrambled video, no video and no power. So our situation of the computer putting itself to sleep (which I believe to be an overheat problem) wouldn't seem to be covered by this.
I'm going to try and get it covered anyway and I'll post what happens.

This sounds like the Thermal Runaway issue. Never heard of it happening on an iMac before though. You can read the system.log to see if that is what happens.
Have you tried running the computer with Energy Saver set to Reduced?

I have. It took a little longer before my iMac put itself to sleep but it still occurred. Sad thing is, even on reduced and not doing anything with screen brightness at the lowest setting the CPU temp. still read 74C. I couldn't get the temp. any lower.

Checked my System.log and there are many "Thermal manager: max. temp. exceeded for 30 seconds, forcing sleep" entries. Thanks for the blog links, that gave me the idea of checking System.log .
