Hi everyone,

Im getting a mac mini no matter the outcome of this because i love them so much! (and i dont currently own a mac, so i guess im the 'target market' of one of these)

I wondered if it was possible to run final cut express on the mac mini. Ive heard of plenty of people using older G4's & laptop G4's to run pro apps such as photoshop & final cut in its various different forms, but no one seems to mention how they run. Looking at the required specs on apples site for FCE, it seems like the mini is adequate to run FCE, and can even handle HD video. The part of the spec i am unsure about is the 'an AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) graphics card compatible with Quartz Extreme', does the mini have that?

Also, on a side note, i plan to get the mini with the 40 gig HD, due to it being slightly faster than the 80, and i also have a 120 gig HD in my sony PC, which i am planning on connecting to the mini via ethernet, which i am planning to either capture video to from the mini, or to capture the video to the mini and then transfer to the sony HD so i have enough space for large video files.

Anyone got any ideas on if any of this should work?

Final Cut Expres runs fine on a mac mini and you'll even get quite a few real-time effects if you're editing Standard Definition DV. The mac mini's specs exceed the minimum requirements for FCE. Don't worry about the graphics card requirement, the mini is fine on that too. I'm running Final Cut 5 on my mini with no problems at all.

Using your sony pc over ethernet as an external scratch drive isn't really going to work. Ethernet is too slow to effectively work off, especially for video. Your best bet would be to get an external firewire drive for your video clips, which would improve your performance.

Well good news about the system requirements then, thanks, although shame about not being able to use my sony, but i suppose i kind of already knew that, i was just hoping! If only the mini had gigabit ethernet....
